View Full Version : Problems with Avis truck rental

Please be very careful renting from Avis. I cannot recommend them anymore although I've used them several times. This time, they took me for $250 in imaginary damages and almost made me miss my flight.
I reserved a pickup online in the US for Bonaire, then arrived on the island and tried to hand in my paper copy of the reservation to the people at the desk. There were three of them, and I was the first and only customer. They had a "trainee" (as listed on her id badge) fill out my form on paper. They refused to look at my online reservation. She had to fill it out three times to get it "right". I repeatedly told her I wanted the full insurance, so I wouldn't have to bother with checkout or any dings or scratches. Forty five minutes later, while I waited in 95 degree heat, and she in an air-conditioned office, she finished and I got my incredibly dented and scratched truck, with no rear bumper, no rear view mirror cover...a really bashed up rental even for Bonaire.
They also printed up a $250 deposit charge slip and imprint of my CC.
When I returned the truck with plenty of time, full tank of gas and no new scratches or dents, they kept me waiting for nearly an hour, even though no one else was checking in a vehicle. They pulled over a "specialist", who said I'd dented the truck, and he pointed to a bit of leaf trapped in the taillight assembly. No cracks, no scratches. I said, fine, I have the full insurance and I have to get my plane. They said, no insurance and magically, it will cost $250 to fix, the exact amount of my deposit.
After some discussion, I was running out of time and signed the slip and just made the flight.
I called Avis USA to complain, and they had no record of the rental at all. They said since I was listed as a "walk up" in a foreign country they would not help me. I called ten times and sent my information to them ten times by email at their request, with their promises to help. They had no interest in helping. They finally wore me out as I realized they were not going to do anything.
So, if you use Avis, print out your online reservation and force them to access it when you get your truck. Don't take a dented one. Leave a couple of hours to check in so you can effectively argue with them. Take pictures of every part of the truck before leaving.
Do yourself a favor, rent from someone else!!!

We were there a couple weeks ago and i rented from Easy 1 rent. They were great. Willem was friendly, helpful and didn't charge me for killing the battery and having to drive me back out to Oil Slick leap to boost it. The trucks aren't marked with rental info so I think it might be safer. (maybe?) Sorry to hear about your troubles rmolk.

We had a similar experience at Avis years ago. My son-in-law was charged exactly $250 for an imaginary dent. We use Poppy - always.

I also rented from Avis once. And only once. Learned my lesson the hard way as well.

To everyone renting any car, truck or scooter, I have rented from Bonaire Rent A Car for 10+ years and I have given them great reviews every year as they do a great job. To this day when I arrive I will always take out my cell phone and make a video of the auto just to prevent problems like what was encountered at the Avis rental company. The reason for this is just in case I missed something that was clearly there when I rented the truck I have no one to blame but my own bad eyes. Years ago I rented from companies at the airport and every time there was some type of problem and my guess is this goes back to the owner and training------stick with B.R.C or AB as they have always given positive service and are great to deal with when something happens. Again just my experiences and likely other companies have done a good job for others posters and remember there are lots of great people on Bonaire. Royce & Mary
