View Full Version : Sea horse or sea horse angel?

In all of my many trips to Bonaire, I had never seen a sea horse because I snorkel rather than dive. A few days ago, I found one in very shallow water on some ropes tethering a boat. I watched it for a few minutes and then convinced myself that it was dead because it moved with the waves and didn't seem alert.

Then I thought to myself, if it were dead, wouldn't it just float away? Do sea horses have some kind of rigor mortis that allow them to still hang on with their tail?

I went back around sunset last night and it was still there but it seemed to be clinging to coral rather than to the ropes. This was around Playa Lechi and the boat was called Bullet.

Has anyone else seen this or know what happens to sea horses when they die?

It was an exceptional snorkel in two other respects. I saw an Ocean Triggerfish right by the Yellow Submarine dock and a Spotted Eagle Ray feeding in the sand. Sunset is such a nice time to be in the water.
