During Xmas while diving near the beach/pier off the Divi parking lot, we saw a pair of big (perhaps 18-24in) white cute fish on the sand area before the reef. They had long alongated fins tail ends. And on the side had a black signature like black spot. They did not have stripes. No camera of course!

Then last week saw the exact same/similar pair (??).. Asked the dive shop and he says it is Spade Fish. However looking at various various Spade Fish pix in web, its not them. Perhaps the fins same but not them.

Have you seen them? Do you know what those cuties are named?

Due to shallow depths, I am assuming it was not narcosis doing tricks on me.....

Cheers

Maybe a Palometa?
Do you remember if the fish shape was long and thin (like a barracuda), or tall and narrow (from the front, like a jack)?

Sounds like a Permit?

WOW guys..... these two are very very close. I think the Palometa is close it.. Esp. those pointy and long ends on the fin and tail. These ones silver colored I think, right? Our were white for sure. And had that signature type black mark towards the lower back, close to the fin. I will show these pix my better memory, as she seem to have that infamous elephant memory.

Palometa and Permit are the same family, just different species. The Palometa is smaller.
Look at the last two entries at http://fishsanibel.com/fish/carangidae.htm.
