View Full Version : Sponge Spawning is not Coral Spawning

Several posts recently have shown pictures of sponges "smoking" in the afternoons, and the posters or some of the commentators have called it coral spawning. But sponges are not coral, so coral spawning is not a correct description. It's kind of like seeing a picture of a dog and saying what a cute cat. Hey, both sponges spawning and coral spawning are really cool events, and good pictures of them are terrific. just hate to see the misuse of the terms.....

Thank you for the correction. In my excitement, I used the wrong term.

Yes thanks, tursiops...and in my quickness to comment on some very entertaining trip reports I used the wrong term as well. I actually do know the difference but didn't have my underwater thinking cap on at the time. ;) That's what makes this forum so helpful...lots of knowledgeable and enthusiastic people sharing their ideas!

i understand the excitement! I'm on island now, and spent 5 dives today hoping to see *something* spawn.....don't much care what, although my bucket list has sea cucumbers on it.....

Maybe tomorrow....:)
