Hi everyone, just re-registered for the forums after my old account disappeared during changes to BT. I'm hugely tempted by the new Insel Air flight from Charlotte to Bonaire, flying thru Curacao.

I know the flight is VERY new, but I'd be interested to hear from peeps who have done it - how was it? I'm a little concerned about the 50 minute layover in Curacao on the way back to Charlotte - is that enough time??

Would love to have an alternative to the midnight Newark flight, so here's hoping this one is a keeper!

I, too, have friends trying to get a flight out of either Miami or Charlotte. They want to leave on a Weds. to stay 10 days at my place. I usually fly Delta from Bradley, Ct. to Atlanta to Bonaire but that only flies on Sat.'s. We usually stay 2-3 weeks so that works for us but 10 days is a problem it looks like. Suggestions?

Check out American Airlines MIA-CUR. I bought a tickie last week for $212. using the AA website. Then Insel or DiviDivi Air, or others to BON.

Thanks for the replies - we usually fly from Bradley, too, sconsetscuba. The MIA flight is an option, but we liked how the Insel flight travels 2x a week. Would love to hear from anyone who has flown it! :D

My wife and I flew from Mia-Cur last november with AA and flew out on a Monday and came home the following Friday. Worked out great. We caught the 11:30a.m. flight arriving in Curacao about 2:40 and connected with Insel for the 5 pm deparure. If you do not want to spend the night in Curacao, make sure you book the earlier flight for same day arrival in Bonaire

Insel may fly 2x week but AA flies 2x/day to Curacao

so the new charlotte to bonaire flight has been flying for a little while now. any input from those who have used it? how is the layover time in curacao? enough time? how about baggage allowance? according to their website you can either take two bags totaling 40kg (88 lbs) on one plane or two bags totaling 30kg (66 lbs) on another. both planes are MD-80s. it's a little confusing but it looks like it could be expensive if your baggage is overweight.

Sconsetscuba...friends of ours came down on Delta on a Saturday and stayed 10 days leaving on a Wednesday...Bonaire/Aruba (non-stop) on Tiara to connect with Delta into Atlanta.

I've booked on the CLT-BON flight in Feb-March. Great price $434 round trip. Usually $900 or more. Can't wait to try it out. Friends went on Insel from MIA-BON and liked it very well. Probably not even change planes in CUR.

i was concerned about the short connecting time on the return leg as well as some possible luggage restrictions. according to their website the luggage allowance on the cur-bon-cur flight could be less because it's a smaller plane. i emailed insel and was told that 1. the connecting time is ok because we'd be going from one insel flight to another, and 2. the baggage allowance is based on the originating flight....if we leave from charlotte on the MD-80 that's the allowance we are given...both ways. they said that our baggage will be checked from clt-bon and we won't have to see it until we get to bonaire. same thing on the return flight. we're booking soon.

Hi rmolk,
I will be taking this same flight in December and had the same concern about the short layover in Curacao. I spoke with an Insel Air service rep from Curacao who assured me that it would not be a problem, that they know what passengers are coming from Bonaire that morning and will wait for them, if necessary.

Hi Pat,
I will be using US Airways Boston / Charlotte and Insel Air the rest of the way. I had the same questions as you about the luggage but on the US Air leg of the trip. I called US Air and was told that the international flight " Insel Air" is the governing carrier thus will determine the luggage policy for the entire trip. She told me that if I adehere to Insel's free luggage limits I would not be charged by US Air. I could not get her to email or mail me such info.

Anyone had any such experience with these " code sharing" two airlines ?

Peter how did you book it? I contacted Insel down here and got a quote for Maggie to come down Xmas for 770.00. I called USAir to have them ticket it and was on hold 45 min as they had to price it by "hand". Their quote was 900+. I see Veyama and Cheapo air will run the tickets but I never use those services.

Hi Ann.... I booked with Vayama in May. In June I recd a schedule change notice from Vayama because Insel changed the departing time from Bon to Cur and it violated Vayama's min layover time policy. On a 3 way conversation with Vayama "India" and Insel "Curacao" we were assured by the Insel"s rep that it would not be a problem, they will wait for us if necessary.
Perhaps because of this short layover I no longer see this particular itenerary on Vayama.com. Good luck.

PS. The weather is great on the Cape, going back to N Truro in a couple of weeks.

Hi Ann.
In the previous post I was telling you that the weather on the Cape is great.. Scratch that, it's about to change due to Irene's visit.

PeterO, I would not count on Insel waiting for you. Sorry, I just wouldn't.

Thanks RosAnne. When I travel to the islands I go with the flow. I expect the worse and hope for the best. Besides, I can think of worse places to be stuck for an extra couple of days.

You probably will be ok with a short connection time on the BON-CUR portion of your CUR-CLT flight, because the morning BON/CUR flight is made to connect to their other flights. It's a small plane, and they'll know you're on it. When it lands in CUR, you'll be escorted by an Insel employee thru the transit area upstairs in CUR. This is a small area-you pay $2 cash at the desk right there, go thru carry-on X-ray & proceed to gate (pay the $2 before getting in the security line). CUR departure lounge is not that big-you can see one end to the other (all 7 gates). I've flown the BON/CUR/MIA flight, and this is exactly what happens.

Ruth. Thank you for the information. I will print it and bring it with me.
The concern is with the Bon/Cur -- Cur/CLT connection but an Insel rep assured me it would not be a problem.
Next year will be 20 years travelling to Bonaire. By now I am used to suprises and the unexpected with flights to and from Bonaire.

I have bigger worries at the moment, Irene is bearing down on us tomorrow. I hope that everyone in it's path stays safe.

I was talking about Insel's BON-CUR then CUR-CLT flights. You & your luggage will be checked thru to CLT from BON, so all you have to do in CUR is follow the Insel rep thru the transit area.

Ruth. Those are the Insel flights I will be taking. Thanks again for the info.

Insel via CUR to CLT or MIA is the next best thing if you can't use their Saturday non-stop BON/MIA, or one of the DL or CO non-stops. Getting your boarding pass and checking your luggage thru is all the difference.

Hi all:
I will be taking BOS-CLT-CUR-BON USAir-Insel flight in March. Insel departure time changed from 2:55 p.m. to 1:55, so now I need to change my USAir flight time for enough connecting time in CLT. What's the minimum amount I should allow? Anyone else booked this Saturday afternoon flight? I got a change notice...but am seeing it as BOTH times on the Insel website. Could this be confusion over daylight savings time change in the US? I will plan on it leaving at 1:55 to be safe.

Good idea Joy....and be sure to call Insel a few days out to confirm your flight. I did that, only to find out my flight from CUR to BON had been canceled - but they got me re-booked on another flight. I am not sure why this did not happen automatically -- probably something to do with the airline being so small and not very automated. If you check some the websites that track flights, you will see that a good number of the Insel flights from CLT leave late anyway...not sure why - so keep that in mind if you have a tight connection in CUR.
