I just received these from Ruth. Wow is all I can say.
Look at www.youtube.com and search for 'Tropical storm Omar Bonaire'. You'll find some videos
Not a principal discussion about rules, and so on, just some blabla-pictures everybody here likes them to get on this board.
From Lion's Den deck about an hour ago. Buddy Dock worse now...boards in northern (old Bon Bini dock) beginning to loosen too.
Video's
o..m...g...
wow, thanks Bas. Looks like there will be flooding in the lower units of Divi...again...wow...
Heard Belmar lost both their docks too. Very sad, so much damage.
KRISPI - what the HECK did you do to the island???
Debbie, I think Belmar had removable planks? Hopefully they got them off in time. I don't think anyone expected this. There were dive boats out this morning, no?
oh my..........
They relocated people from the Divi lower level earlier today (and maybe from the upper level...it's all roped off).
delete my post above
Ken please try \image{text} (so with the other \... )
Never mind, you saw it...
Ken \ , not /.
I saw it... and still missed one the second time. It's only been 3 or 4 years since I posted a pic.
Carib Inn dock above...
so sad............
Karel's according to www.nu.nl
Yes, the little house on the end of the Karel's pier is gone now too.
How is your home holding out Harrie?
That's awful.
All the damage I've seen has been from waves (except a few downed lines). You walk a block inland and it's business as usual.
Jerry,
Boat chick, sorry, you are wrong there - it could have been expected since yesterday before noon.
Harrie and everyone else on island, I will keep good thoughts for you for the night.
Ken, thanx for offering help.
OMG. This is terrible. We hope the forecasters are wrong about what lies ahead with this storm. OMG. cb
Here are a couple of Divi shots from June 2008....before Oscar. The poor coral was just making a good comeback after Lenny and Ivan, etals....what a shame. It will bring more juvie fish out, tho. cb
Obviously I have two shots of Karel's Bar before today....what a shame, for sure. cb
I have tears. I don't know what to write. I'm so sorry this is happening. Please be careful everyone.
I heard that BDA at Den Laman lost their dock, just days after they finished renovations/maintenance on it. Are there any updates/photos from that area?
How is the dock at the Sandollar holding up? I heard they did some work on it a month or so ago?
I spoke with someone who lives on island. BDA lost their dock, as have most.
Leo,
Harrie thanks. Why doesn't STINAPA like docks? The few that I've seen while on Bonaire don't seem to encroach (too much) in the reef. And since they sit on stilts they don't seem to affect currents or effect shoreline erosion, right? Is the objection based on the aesthetics (or lack thereof) of the docks?
Shucks - I told people that I found a place away from those cursed storms. I suppose unless I want to dive the West coast of Africa there is no such place. Anyone know if the sharks eat you off the coast of Africa?
I just had a look at the satellite picture from 9.35 pm and it looks like an eye is forming already ....
Leo,
No matter what damage has been done to property, the reefs have been getting pounded for over 30 hours. From what I can understand of the weather forecasts and the lack of speed with which Omar is moving it looks as though they will not get a break today. Selfishly I wish he would pick up speed and get away from here. Where ever he heads it is going to have a major impact. I hope they are better prepared than we have been.
wow, so sorry guys, we will be at the divi in december....sorry, scott and troy
No or few piers on Bonaire? That would be--- strange.
It rained most of the night and the wind has not let up. Waves actually seem a little larger but they are crashing further out. I'm going for a walk/drive now.
Harrie, Al usually pulls the planks from his dock before a storm. Did he not get a chance to pull them this time? We were there when Emily came through a few years back and he and Rick pulled the planks and everyone helped prep the courtyard area.....
Hello all. We are arriving Sat. night at the Sand Dollar Resort. This is our first trip to Bonaire. Does anyone know the conditions there? Thank You
Gail, scroll up to Harrie's pics, Al did get planks removed from the BD pier. Unfortunatley, a lot of others did not as they didn't think this SOO would be what he has turned into.
there are some vids on youtube...this one is just...oh my
BC - I took Harrie's comment to mean that the deck is gone, as in washed away, and some of the planks washed up on his shore. That's why I'm asking for clarification. From the picture, it looks like the are planks piled up. I'm cornfused!
Gail, you are probably correct...I took it that Al picked them up and asked Harrie to store them...but probably NOT...oops!
Just popped in for awhile, untill the power stops.
KRIPSI - I've been thinkin' about you sista. How you holding out?
About the damage to the reef:
I, too, am saddened to hear that Omar has reached Bonaire. I hope everyone stays safe, and the recovery is quick.
Where did the ocean going tugs go for the storm? Any pictures of the Harbor? I bet it is crowded in there.
I e-mailed Tim at Fish Eye and someone named Michael reply this morning since Tim is on holiday. He said that the Bonaire Dive and Adventure pier was currently holding together due to the structural work that was just completed. He also said the Sunset Restaurant is open for business, which admittedly astonished me.
Thanks for the response Harrie. I often sat at the end of the dock and admired your colorful beach hut!
Michael Gaynor???
Good news for the Divi in that the main dive dock complete with gazebo roof is intact.
As for tourism - I'm arriving on Saturday too and staying at Den Laman for my first trip. I'm glad the dock is in tact, and I agree with the talk about damage to the reefs. Thanks so much for the updates and we'll just go with the flow. Here's hoping the waters calm soon so the clean up can begin.
This was posted on CNN.com just now: http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-114490
this is a long vid, but very good, and disturbing
My wife and I arrive on the Sunday morning flight out of Newark for our 3rd trip to the island. My jaw dropped as I read the posts and saw the news of Omar this morning.
Good attitude Shane. From the looks of it there will be plenty of opportunity for kindness as well.
Does any body knows if any damage on the houses in Punt Vierkant ?
Having lived through this trajedy a number of times, I can say that it wont be long before the top side damage is repaired. Different story for what lies below...the sky is starting to look brighter as I write this. The sun will come out tomorrow...
Cynde, thanks for the video. It makes us so sad!
The most positive thing about these pics is that thankfully there are no injured people in them.
This is horrendous. I am heartsick about the reef damage. My best goes out to all on land who have suffered losses as well.
3 pm till now, 9:30pm.
glad to hear main dock of divi is not damaged. the rest from pictures looks to be quite a mess. just glad no one was hurt.
Does anyone know the status of the Belmar?
Glad to hear the people of Bonaire made it though Omar safe. Would love to hear about the damage below...

Spoke with Andre at BDA this morning and he only has to replace a few planks they removed and his pier will be ready. I also know the rest. is operating as well...
Will, I've seen pics of the Belmar docs, they removed some planks, but as of now, there are pretty much no planks. The docs are still standing, but with significant damage. Amazingly, the palapa on the sun dock is still standing. The pool is overflowing (to be expected).
Michael, good news for BDA...after what they went through with lenny, they caught a break.
I received the following note from Belmar this morning on how they faired...
Does anyone know how the North weathered? Caribbean Club and Hilltop which is close to Oil Slick Leap. I read that Oil Slick platform and ladder were gone.
I was up there yesterday pm and the road was closed at Stinapa/Carribean Club. Not sure if it is open yet.
Glad to know that OMAR ! now is far from Bonaire . Any pictures of the day after......?

Here's a few from this morning.
Wow..... thank you Ken
thanks to everybody who posted pictures and videos. fortunately no one was killed during the storm.
Pat any word on LBR?
A few more
Thanks for the after photos. Any one get in the water today? How much of the debris ended up on the reef.
Thanks KEN ,With Omar Tropical Storm we can feel the power of the sea ! looks like a lot of damage on Karel`s Bar and Divi Flamingo Beach ! thanks again.
Thank you, Ken!
I have received (thankfully) word that Sand$ condo's suffered no major damage from the storm and the dive pier shared between Sand$ and Den Laman is basically OK.
The pics of course are focused on the damage but nobody should really worry about upcoming trips. The Divi staff was out surveying the damage as I'm sure other locations were. Businesses will cleanup and I'm sure they will make repairs or other arrangements as necessary to not impact anyones vacation. In a week you'd probably be hard pressed to tell anything happened other than missing piers.
thanks Ken - It should be an interesting trip. I've been coming to Bonaire for 20 years and I haven't seen anything quite this damaging. We want to move to the island one of these days but will need to find some kind of work. If you or anyone has some suggestions of people to talk to regarding this then we would appreciate the info. Also, I have a question. Does anyone know if you must have a Bonaire address before they will issue you a drivers license. We have decided to try to obtain licenses on this trip. Thanks again for the direction to the photos - they say more than words could express.
I'm glad it's over....Was there any destruction to the Plaza beach ?
ken
Steve, if I'm not mistaken, you must be able to prove residency to apply for a drivers license on Bonaire.
I have not been able to find the words to express my feelings to everyone about my reaction and emotions to Omar and Bonaire. I still may not express how I feel in any coherent manner so please just bare with me.
To all our friends in Bonaire - we are glad you are all safe. Thanks to those of you who have posted the pictures and videos, they are so informative. We just want to be there right now to help but we can't get there until January. Until then, good luck to you all.
Just my two bits....and a great expression of support to those that have and will be dealing with the impacts of this and other storms.
The diving and their support teams, dive shops, hotels, food establishments, etc. will be up and running in no time. I'm worried about the local Bonaire residents. How are they doing? Is there wind/water damage to their homes? Is so, I bet a lot of diving visitors would be happy to give a few hours, or even a full day in cleanup with the residents.
The Extra has a number of pictures of the damage by Omar along the waterfront in town
Thanks, Brigitte. There is a lot of damage on the waterfront area. The power and force of water is amazing. So much destruction. Even the trees were hammered by the tidal surges. Constant and relentless pounding for hours on end.
I was there for 2 weeks - Oct 4 - 18. We got in most of our dives before the storm. After the storm, we got the chance to dive on the east side since that was the calm place after the storm. It was a nice change from the west side.
Thanks for the information, Deborah. It must have been something else to be there and watch the storm grow and see the resultant damage(s). Hope the deeper waters survived better than the shallows. cb
Any info on how the northern resorts and dive operators/sites faired; Sand Dollar, Buddy's, Lion's, Capt Don's, etc.
tara, the last word i received is that LBR made it through with virtually no structural damage. i've heard of one or two units with small amounts of water (rain and/or ocean) inside. the beach got trashed and a lot of work will need to be done to save the palm trees on the beach. it could have been a lot worse.
