Jake finally went after those black brotula pics yesterday after replacing the reefcam.

So here is the Black Brotula in all its glory. I made a collage of three pics so you could get an idea of its ripple movements.

Great pictures, Jake. And thanks, Linda, for making them into a collage.

What kind of camera was used if you don't mind my asking?

It's a Nikon 8008s camera in a Subal housing, with twin SB-105 strobes. Lens is a 60mm Nikkor Macro.

Photo involved trying to hold a flashlight on the brotula so I could autofocus on it. The little bugger is about 3-4 inches long, as you know.

Thank you, I am looking into getting a slr camera with housing so was just curious. I took a picture of the Black Brotula with my mx-10 and as I was expecting, it did not turn out very well.

Jake - fantastic pictures! Housing sure make the difference don't they - just wish I could afford the step up from the Nikonos V. Oh well - I'll just have to satisfy myself with pictures like yours.

Jake-
What wonderful pictures!
The THREE black brotulas were in the cave at Small Wall anytime we checked in the last three weeks. The small one at the very back on the left. The two bigger ones in the upper left 'hole'. Their swimming action is very much like an eel... facinating to watch. Just be careful that your bubbles don't fill the space where they 'hide' - they seem to get very upset with that - or maybe they were coming down to 'clean' Ed ???
We checked the cave at Karpata for brotulas but didn't see any.

Thanks :-)

I looked for the other two you mentioned, but did not see them anywhere. How big were they?

The two big ones were maybe three times the side of the small one at the back of the cave

Great pictures! My favorite carribean fish. Here in Florida they seem to get much larger than they do in the Islands for some reason, frequently 4-6".seasonally in breeding pairs with the females considerably larger.
