I usually bring my own shopping bags with me to go to the market. Are they frowning on that while covid is going on? I hate to add any kind of trash to the island if I don’t need to!

No issue since you pack them yourself.

Using your own bags is the norm on Bonaire and has remained so during the current Covid times. As Chris noted, no worries.
At VDT, you must be an Olympic Class packer, as they move items very quickly past the scanner into the packing area.
