Default Email From Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire

Hi Everybody.. I just got this email about the pier area near Karel’s Beach Bar & Watersport. It sounds scary to me. If anyone would like to take a look at this take a look here please.... https://mailchi.mp/c559ccf426c7/upda...k?e=e5c9e534ea

Yes the allowing of the permit to be isssued is interesting. However, STINAPA did write a letter in favour of the project proceeding. As I understand it Karelís will be building a new over the water beach bar/restaurant on the pilings that were placed for that purpose some 10 years back. I have not seen any plans or even design concepts so I have no idea what it will look like.

Can someone post the STINAPA letter here? I could not find it on the STINAPA site.

STINAPA is silent in all this. There is nothing about the new pier on their website. Is there a STINAPA letter of support? How was the permit announced?

When Karel wanted to install new piers, successful court action was taken, paid for by donations. Many donors were from this board. How about now?

I will try and track the letter down, I read it as part of a news report on the topic from the on-line Boanire Reporter IIRC. That was early last week again IIRC. I’ll see what I can find on-line.

EDIT, The article I read is in the Jan/Fed issue of the on-line Bonaire Reporter.

Thank you, Canuck52. The article is on P.7 of the Jan 21 - Feb 4 edition of the Bonaire Reporter. In the article, STINAPA says, it is their "responsibility under the law is to manage the national parks, mindful of the need for a careful balance between nature conservation and sustainable and responsible use of our resources. STINAPA is the supervisory authority with the duty to ensure that all actors adhere to the law, and to the conditions of the nature permit."

They say that Karel made changes to the permit-request to limit the scope of the building and the operations that will be performed. This is a closed process, however, so we won't be able to see what those changes were. We will be able to see if the new pier and restaurant (and whatever else was agreed to), damages the environment while it's being built and once it's in use.

I hope STINAPA is right. Most of all, I hope Karel is kind and respectful to the reef. He's been given a special gift: the only over water restaurant on Bonaire. A further concern is that others will seek to create or expand other piers. What will STINAPA say to them?

BonaireTalk has changed. Just a few years ago, this thread would have generated many impassioned posts. On FB, there is only one post on Forum Bonaire posted about the WWF and STCB; it got four LIKES but no responses. BonaireTalk FB has no posts.

The passivity is a bit concerning.

I agree RandL, but I also blame Face Fart for a big part of it, the majority of BTers use that daily, with only ca. 40 visitors to BT daily now, from 100's about 5 years ago

Here's some links to some history behind the Pier development problems/results of protests in the last 7 years....
