    Default AVIRAMP

MIVABO, Bonaire’s premiere advocacy organization addressing the rights and needs for people with disabilities, is spearheading the drive to ensure all people, no matter where they are from, have unfettered access to Bonaire. We want to show our deep concern and support for those rights starting at our front door! In this case, it is Bonaire International Airport (BIA) where travelers with disabilities encounter the first barriers just trying to deplane. Persons with severe disabilities must be carried off by two very strong men and then brought down a steep flight of portable stairs. This is not only dangerous but demeaning to the passengers.

The solution is simple. AVIRAMP, a UK Corporation, manufactures moveable jet ways that allow passengers safe and easy access and deplaning. Recently, the company demonstrated during a mini conference, the advantages and benefits for Bonaire adding two of their ramps to service our passengers The plan was embraced by the various representatives but somehow is moving forward at a snail’s pace.

This year, MIVABO has decided to be more vocal and speak out and be heard. We know they “are working on it and are busy with it”. Well, SO ARE WE! The board has decided that we will undertake all efforts to raise the $250 thousand and make sure the funds are used exclusively for the purchase and installation of the ramps.

AVIRAMP 2015 will kick off a fund raising drive with a news conference on Tuesday, April 1st at Bistro di Paris at 5 pm. A short presentation showing what AVIRAMP will do for our island and also what MIVABO has done to date and its new focus on being more proactive. It is almost 4 years and most of the promises made to us are still pending. We are putting government on notice and expect them to listen. The following quote by former U.S. Senator Hubert Humphrey is apropos. "The moral test of government is how it treats those who are in the dawn of life . . . the children; those who are in the twilight of life . . . the elderly; and those who are in the shadow of life . . . the sick . . . the needy . . . and the disabled."
We will announce how everyone can help to fund this project on April 1 If you have any questions, contact me. or

Michael -- have you considered a crowd-funding approach, such as for some of the fund-raising? Typically there is a modest quid pro quo for the folks who donate, such as they receive a photo of the AVIRAMP's signed by some Bonaire dignitary if they donate more than $, having their name on a plaque at Flamingo Airport if they donate more than $$, having their name on a plaque fixed to each of the AVIRAMP's if they donate more than $$$, or whatever idea you might have.

My son just used this process very successfully on a much less important project. The funding level wasn't as high, but he got more than 800 donors.
