    Default Two Nice Weeks

Flew out of Dulles December 28, on to Houston with a bit of a layover, then the final leg to Bonaire arriveing about 7:30AM or so-a bit late. Seemed quicker than in 2009 when it was Heathrow to Amsterdam then over to Bonaire although about the same total hours. Bel Mar was there to pick us up, quick trip and a very pleasent surprise-our room was ready and stocked with some cheese, yougart and crossiants. Nice room as well, unit 2 on the first floor. Both bedrooms had private bathrooms. Big 'fridge with an in the door ice maker and cold water-sweet. Did some shopping, some snorkleing and the orientation.

We were impressed with the house reef. A bit longer swim out than at Buddy Dive but not a big deal. Saw lots of fish on each dive, tons of soft corals, eels, flamingo tonges and the odd 'cuda or two. Might be the peepers are getting fussy but did not see any shrimps. Did a dive or two at Buddy, visting the wreck at Captain Dan during both.

We were favorably impressed with the new grocery store. The oranges were so good the three of us were going through a 2 Kilo bag of them about every day. One visit there they had a grocery cart full of 'left over' Christmas candy with a sign that said "Gratis". Most apreciated.

Dined in and had a take away at Bobbiejans, a meal at Casablanca, a Lion Fish Pizza at Pasa Bon, another visit with an artichoke&sausage pizza, some grilled Lion Fish while visiting with Haggen at the mobile Cactus Blue, ice cream at the old Lovers by the Sand Dollar, italian gellatto in town. In general all were nice but the view at Haggen's place is outstanding!

As I mentioned in the photography thread the Dutch Gentleman in the unit next to ours at Bel Mar was a busy picture taker and wow, what pictures! You can see them here http://www.hansvanwijck.nl/p453720202

The Fireworks in the days leading up to New Years were banging away and on the actual eve the intensity continued to build until about 11:30 when it went up again. By the start of the new year it would seem the whole island, as viewed from the Bel Mar Dock was busy setting them off. Quite an impressive sight that videos do not do justice-as I can prove by the one I took http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L943Kb1Ova0 the sound of them did come out pretty well...

Anyway, nice two weeks and as usual the first week stretches and makes the second week seem far away and then suddenly the time rebounds and suddenly it's pack out time. While not as nice as the photos Hans took between Marie and I we did get a few shots and they can be seen here http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/c...view=slideshow

All and all a very nice break and when we got back to Dulles on the 12th after leaving with snow on the ground back in December it was about 60 degrees so we didn't freeze to death.

p.s. one of the divemasters at Bel Mar, Daan van Schalk, is a Lion Fish Hunter and has a series of videos on youtube. I like this one the best as it covers the experience start to finish http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=193_Q0bbnsQ

I forgot to mention we also had dinner at City Cafe (nice) and at Rumba. Rumba turned out to be a very nice evening, good service, nice food and an over all feeling of getting more than our money's worth, which was quite nice.

Thanks for the tip about Rumba. Based on some quick research, it sounds like a good location and a good value. We will try it next time.

Thanks for the trip report Dean. Rumba was recommended to us last June and we really enjoyed our meals.
Hope to get by there on our next trip.
