    Default Malmok Research Station

I just read an interesting article in the Reporter about Klein BOnaire and the remnants of a small house located there. I've been trying to get some background on another old house on Bonaire - in Washington Slagbaai there is a site called Malmok, and the brochure says it was a research station. But no-one can tell me what the research was for and who was doing that research.

Anyone here can help me out?

malmok was built in the early 1900's but never used because it is too close to the sea and is continuously battered by wave action. Perhaps what you are thinking of is in the 1990's the total eclipse of the sun occurred at the Malmok location and there was a lot of scientific activity for that event but only that .. hope this helps...

Malmok was built to be the lighthouse for the north coast ..but was never used and the lighthouse was built inland at Bentana...

Google is your friend....if the search is suitably constrained.
I had looked earlier, found nothing worthwhile. But Petri's mention of the eclipse made the search work.

Thanks for the information! I'd googled before but could find nothing. People's combined memories still beat Google (but for how long...).

If my memory is correct there was sitting and food available at Malmok for the Feb 26 1998 total Eclipse.
My wife and I saw it from Jerry F's "SeaCow" about 10 miles north of Bonaire along with about 8 other people.
My one and only total eclipse.

Interesting article Mel. That picture of the lighthouse with the new automated light looks suspiciously like the existing lighthouse at Seru Bentana. Are/were there two identical structures, or am I reading the article in the Reporter wrong? I find it neat to learn these old history lessons.

I think the old structure being referred to is this one: http://www.bonbinibonaire.nl/en/wash...l#!prettyPhoto[page]/0/
For some reason the picture in the Bonaire Reporter article is of the existing lighthouse.
