Has anyone heard anything about the recent oil spill? Apparently it has reached the shore on the east coast of Bonaire. Two sea birds affected so far and tar reaching the beach there. Any updates? How about clean up efforts?

STINAPA has been organizing clean up events, all I know is from their facebook page.

Here is a quick summary: As of Wednesday, nearly 7200 kilos of tar and affected detritus has been collected and are being contained at Selibon's waste management location. When all is said and done, it will be weighed and then responsibly discarded.

So far what I have heard is that there are 12 known deaths of boobies (seabirds), six more are in the care of Elly Albers at the Mangrove Center, of which five are stable (but still needing cleansing, as the tar doesn't come off easily); one is unstable.

There is a large island-wide cleanup effort tomorrow morning, so we will know more probably early next week. The tar globules do seem to be lessening.
