The current issue of the Bonaire Reporter newspaper features an interesting cover story on the Donkey Sanctuary. http://bonairereporter.com/

It is a great article. Gives a thorough historical perspective. Anxious to see the new place on the next trip.

We're new home owners here on the island. Are volunteers needed at the sanctuary? Would volunteering (no experience) help this situation at all?

BREAKING NEWS!!![

CRITICALLY ENDANGERED NUBIAN ASS DNA CONFIRMED A PERFECT MATCH ON BONAIRE (Dutch Antilles)

IT IS NOW OFFICIAL. Our Bonairean Donkey’s DNA is a perfect match for Nubian Ass. This means that our donkeys are NUBIAN ASS! They are on the Critically Endangered IUCN Red list of endangered species and are to be protected “wherever found”.

Rona Aguliar, member of the team started by Al Catalfumo and joined by Marjorie Farabee of Todd Mission Ranch Wild Burro Protection League, and Wild Horse Freedom Federation discovered the description the Nubian Ass connection in a book written about the animals by Bart A. de Boer. Marjorie Farabee told Rona that these were an endangered species and now the rest is history! Since the contract was signed in September many have been castrated and killed. It has been confirmed that elimination is the goal of the government, and for three months we have implored the government to protect Bonaire’s special donkeys.

DNA samples were sent to Marjorie who brought them to Dr. Gus Cothran at TAMU (Texas A&M).
At midnight, 3/28/2014 Marjorie got a message from Dr. Gus Cothran that confirming that the samples we sent ARE pure NUBIAN ASS!! Although still listed as Critically Endangered they have been presumed to be extinct since the 1950’s to be protected “wherever found”.

We have been asking Bonaire's Government for two months to put a temporary stop to the catching, castrating and killing of Bonairean Donkeys due to their cultural connection to the people of Bonaire’s past. Our plea was callously ignored.

At a meeting with the Island council we presented our data and asked the council to stop the capturing, killing and castrating the donkeys of Bonaire.

The island council was impressed with our presentation and asked us to meet with the Executive Council since they would have to make the decision to stop the contract now in place between the Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire and the government.

Then a message was received from the council secretary telling us that the advisors present saw no sufficient grounds to advise to stop the contract.

Now, it is imperative that the Bonairean Government STOP this contract immediately. This is an international affair. This is a huge scientific discovery. This is history.

Special thanks to Karen Van Atta, Carl Mrozek, Jesica Johnston, Kathy Gregg, Craig Downer, T. T. Cicilia, Chum-Tai Soon, Johnny Straitz and all the people of Bonaire who have faith in the truth.

Not sure what this all means and I hope it does not mean that a bunch of outsiders deciding the best option is let them run wild and breed, we know how that works out. Now more money for protection and controlled breading would be wonderful. We all just want what is best for all donkeys and humans.

I wish some of the activists who find the time to write lengthy, critical articles and have the energy to circulate petitions would use some of that time and energy to volunteer at the Sanctuary. It's disingenuous to blast Marina Melis and her husband after all their years of thankless service. Where were these folks 10 years ago or five years ago?

And to characterize Ms. Melis as getting rich off of a scam is just outrageous.

Like the animal shelter, the Donkey Sanctuary needs volunteers - now more than ever.

I totally agree Randl! If these people were concerned about the donkey's, then why not sit down & talk with Marina and see what they can do to help? That's what anyone who REALLY cared would do.

If the managers are willing to kill donkeys--in what way does the term sanctuary apply?

I read on Forum Bonaire that the island council voted unanimously today to stop killing and castrating donkeys immediately. I hope the council will see fit to feed, water, and provide vet care as the sanctuary apparently has not.
