We are on the verge of hitting our one year anniversary of the fabled move of the Bonaire WebCams to Eden Beach.

Around a year ago, nearly three dozen of you offered and pledged to help sponsor the Bonaire WebCams Internet connection with an annual donation. See the Individual Sponsors listed at http://www.bonairewebcams.com/Sponsors.php to see if you are among these folks.

This effort raised approximate $2500, which was spent in less than half a year on the expensive but moderately reliable leased line connection we had set up with Telbo. The high cost of the connection (which we did not learn about until just a couple of months ago) resulted in us switching to the much more affordable (but subsequently also less reliable, at least for now) FTV cable Internet connection.

We are hoping that Telbo's ADSL service becomes available on Bonaire soon (it's in trial and may roll out in the next one to two months), and that perhaps we can load balance between that and the FTV connection (which will be just around our budget for bandwidth, we think).

We will also be looking at ways to further reduce the amount of data we have to ship up from Bonaire to the server in the U.S., in the hopes that let's more captures get through in a timely fashion. To this end, we have a new high end server system we installed in the WebCams room at Eden Beach last Friday, with new capture technology, with which we will be experimenting in the coming weeks. A new web server with more CPU and storage capacity will also be going on-line in the U.S. in the next couple of months.

Dan and I don't like asking for money or financial support - it feels like begging, and that's not something we are comfortable with. However, the bandwidth expenses are real. Thus, for those of you who did pledge financial support for the Bonaire WebCams Internet connection for a 3 year period last year, Dan and I would like to ask that you consider making the second annual donation in the coming weeks. Thanks for the tech update. I understand I'm the same way, I have trouble asking people for help.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I thank my lucky stars to be part of such wonderful community as BT and the cams. The people here celebrate each others joys and achievements, come together at times of crisis and support each other in times of need. It is a very rare group of people here, and I'm glad I've "met" everyone.

I said a few days ago, this is my only vice and I'm happy to donate some dollars to feed my addiction. It can't be easy maintaining a relatively free webcam site, so a big thank you to everyone involved!!

On a related note, I'm pleased to report that the backlog of captured WebCam images on Bonaire has finally completed transfer to the archives on the web servers in Massachusetts after all the Internet outages we experienced over the last week. The Internet connection with FTV seems to have finally stabilized - we are still getting some mid-afternoon packet losses, but I can now at least get the archives updated within a few hours of that happening.

Hi, everybody! We are here on Bonaire at Chat Browse checking on our email and I see that Jake sent me a quick note about the campaign. Sorry I was a bit late, been to Majorca. Watched people doing try dives and was glad I dive in Bonaire now.
Prefer the webcams to cold water diving!
